Art: The World's Greatest Paintings Explored and Explained
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (April, 1995)
Author: Robert Cumming
Average review score:

If you only invest in 1 book to learn about art, this is it.
This book is a great introduction or review for adults or teens. Using famous works of art, in color sure beats the first art appreciation book I read in college which had drawings and black and white grainy photos. Even with a degree in art history, I found this book a great refresher.

this is a terrific book
This is both fun and informative. Though the language may be pitched at a relatively easy level, there is nothing condescending about it. It is deeply informed, and even the professor will learn from it. Buy it without hesitation if you wish to learn about great paintings.

Book For All Ages and A Great Author
I am only 13 years old and I have this book and I thought it was great. It really did explain art. I saw things that I actually wouldn't notice if I was explaining the picture. It was an interesting book and I enjoyed looking at it. It made me understand the pictures and made art funner and more interestig than it used to be. It was very interesting and I hope you buy this book.

Balancing Heaven and Earth : A Memoir
Published in Hardcover by Harper SanFrancisco (February, 1998)
Author: Robert A. Johnson
Average review score:

Johnson's Moving Memoir
Robert Johnson was my first introduction to Jungian psychology. His simple, yet profound little books (He, She, We, Ecstasy, et al.) impacted my life deeply. In this his memoirs, Johnson relates a moving account of a life and all that it encompasses. The suffering, joy, and those wonderful "grail castle" experiences. If you are aquianted with Johnson's previous work, then this book will be all the more enjoyable. However, it may be a good starting point into learning more about Johnson's previous, more scholarly work on Jungian psychology.

possibly his best book...
....insightful, humbling, stated simply, an eloquent autobiographical piece by the well-known Jungian analyst. Memorable items include his clash with Jolanda Jacobe and his frustration with Krishnamurti.

A View Through Young Eyes
My soul (as my mind percieves it) has not yet found the thread of enlightenment. I accept the path to stumble, fall, rise up and down and to reach into the oblivion of understanding. I have seventeen short years behind my eyes, and strive to become an old woman. I thank Robert Johnson and his writings in "Balancing Heaven and Earth", as it is of great comfort to known although I am alone in my personal journey, I am not alone in my attempt to find a middle path between the extremes of human despair and joy, and the truths behind it. I have often gazed upon the world in realization that I do not, in fact, understand it in the least! I cannot comprehend the forces behind the companies which constructed the buildings and the societies that mesh and become urban life (although the boundaries between urban and sub-urban, country, city, town and household have been blurred beyond recognition). Yet it is of comfort to me to have the opportunity to read Robert Johnson's biographical writings...as I have great respect for him. I shall further indulge in his other works!

Bass Master Shaw Grigsby : Notes on Fishing and Life
Published in Paperback by National Geographic (February, 2000)
Authors: Shaw jr. Grigsby and Robert Coram
Average review score:

Small but Powerful
I give this book a 5, and I own a lot of fishing books.

When I first purchased the book it seemed a bit small, would it be worth it? It was.

In short chapters it discusses how to improve your fishing, tournament ethics, and family fishing. That's a lot of ground.

Tired of all those birds nests in your spinning reel? Why not follow Shaw's advice and cast and tug your line gently. No more snarls. Shaw doesn't use the word ethics but that's what he's talking about for tournaments. Read it, and you'll fish differently with your buddies. As for family, Shaw's kind remarks about his wife, kids and dad are special.

I didn't realize it until now but this is a great kid's book also. It works on different levels. Hope the review helps.

A MUST READ
At 47 years old I am new to bass fishing. As a trout fisherman all my life I have never been a fan Bass fishing! This book has given me all the basics of how to catch and understand Mr. Bass in very easy to read format. Plus it offers an outlook that will change your point of view of life and fishing. An author I would really like to meet!

Shaw Grigsby is a master human being.
As a novice fisherman, I found that Shaw Grigsby has a grasp of what one needs to become a "real fisherman." It takes alot more than casting and hoping that a fish will take the bait. It is a very cerebral sport and Mr. Grigsby is able to get across in his writing how to fish the correct way and to be most productive in your endeavor. One thing that made me feel good was when he wrote about even the best fishermen, champions, sometimes getting "Skunked." Just a real delight to read and very easy reading too. My most recent fising trip was kind of a flop, but I did use his advice and it worked. Wonderful book for the novice or the veteran fisherman. Would love to meet Shaw Grigsby and pick his mind on the wonderful sport of fishing.

Beaute' Made Simple

Author: Robert Jones
Average review score:

A great gift for women of all ages
Beaute Made Simple by Robert Jones and Healthy Beauty by Letha Hadady are the gift combo I am giving all my female relatives and friends. What fun they are! What good information I found in both books!

A must have
It is a great book. It does make the art of makeup less mysterious. The pictures are glorious full color pages. It holds the attention of even the most finicky teenage, and since he promotes a more natural look and I would encourage anyone with teenage girls in the family to get this book. I'm long past being a teenager and still learned things from reading this book.

AWESOME BOOK!!
This is a great book whether you are just buying it for yourself or if you are in the cosmetics business. I am a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant and got to attend one of Robert's workshops (6 hours), and he is fabulous (and VERY funny)!! He is an International Makeup Artist, and everything taught at his workshop is covered in the book. He makes it so easy! He discusses what colors to use on what eye colors, etc..., face shape, eye shape, how to cover up imperfections, etc... He also discusses all the different products used (foundation, powder, concealer, color, skin care, etc...) and how to use them correctly. The book contains LOTS of before and after pictures, all ages, many NOT models with descriptions of their imperfections and how he corrected them. He lists colors too, so you can recreate the looks yourself. If you want to look younger and look beautiful, Robert can show you how. It really is much easier than we all make it seem! :) There is also a video/DVD that is really helpful.

Beyond the Bus Stop: 180 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in School
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (July, 1999)
Author: Robert E. Jr. Weyhmuller
Average review score:

Before you say goodbye...
Before anyone sends their son or daughter off to school, they should read this book. Reading Weyhmuller's book gave me a more confident attitude about being the parent of a school child. There were specific steps that I could easily do to make my child's experience in school a more positive one. Most parents want to do the right thing about helping their kids with school. Weyhmuller's book provided a wealth of advice on how to be such a parent. It was the best book that I had bought in years.

A real support toward successful learning
After many years of working with children of all ages in school settings, I commend the author on making the "secrets" of school success so doable. This easily readable book should be a must for parents at the beginning of the school year. It holds many practical applications to help a child be a successful student. If parents were to follow only a portion of the suggested "tips", their children's 180 days in school each year would go much smoother.

Beyond the Bus Stop: 180 ways to Help YourChild Suceed in Sh
This little book is a real gem for parents. I have used it as a gift for parents of children just entering school. It speaks to the issue of learning and assisting your child. It is written for parents, not for professionals and it allies the fears of many parents who try to help their children. The personal anecdotes help parents to identify.

Blind Courage
Published in Hardcover by Irwin Associates (June, 1991)
Authors: Bill Irwin, David McCasland, and Robert H. Schuller
Average review score:

A well-told story of courage, faith, and a triumphant spirit
I just finished reading "Blind Courage" for the second time. Bill Irwin's story offers a timeless story of courage, faith, and a triumphant spirit as he was the first "blind" person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. I write "blind" because Bill may not have the sense of eyesight, but throughout the book has great insight into persons he meets along his walk, and relates the greatest insight into his own self and his strengths and weaknesses, on a hike (he was not an experienced hiker) all possible by his enduring faith in our Lord and his confidence in his Seeing Eye dog, Orient. The book flows well, doesn't sound "preachy", and reads quickly--almost too quickly as we want to hear more. This is a great story by a great man who spent his first almost 50 years in turmoil, broken relationships, and losing his eyesight, but he finds himself and encourages and uplifts others along his hike. By the way, if you have an opportunity to hear him speak, Bill Irwin is an outstanding public speaker with a great message and is a very friendly individual. In summary, read this book if you are looking for modern heroes and uplifting people of faith doing the "impossible" regardless of whether you enjoy "outdoor/hiking/camping" books or not.

A step of Faith !
My review of this book is one of pure joy and inspiration. From the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew it had a great message written in it. I meet Bill and Orient when they came to the Lititz Grace Brethern Church. Even after reading his story and hearing his testomony it was totally indescribleable. Bill is a wonderful speaker and Orient is just the most lovable dog you could ever know. To have a dog like that which leads you over that terrain from Georgia to Maine is a true friend.

They both had a good friend in the Lord and he truly lead them on a spititrual path and from all of this a remarkable story. Again I personally give this book FIVE STARS.

This book and this mans story can change your life!
This man has an incredible story to share with you. It is a book that you cannot put down once you start reading it. It will give you encouragement and hope. He still hikes parts of the trail every year encouraging the people out there today.

Boeing Kc-135 Stratotanker: More Than Just a Tanker
Published in Paperback by Aerofax Midland Pub Ltd (July, 1998)
Author: Robert S. Hopkins III
Average review score:

Boeing KC-135 - More Than Just A Tanker
I recently completed reading Dr. Hopkin's excellent book on an unbelievable aircraft. The only thing that the C-135 series of aircraft didn't do was air-to-air combat! The book is an exhaustive, highly-detailed history of every model of aircraft developed from the basic KC-135 Stratotanker, covering the development history of each mission type (tanker, transport, reconnaissance, etc.) and also each specific aircraft modified for its particular purpose. I flew on 3 different models of the RC-135 series for 3 years while in the Air Force and was amazed at how many previous reconnaissance variants preceeded the common types used today. I recommend this book for any military aviation buff, but also for anyone who was privileged to have been a crewmember on such a versatile aircraft over the last 40+ years. The many previously-unpublished photographs nicely compliment the very informative text.

Excellent Book!
As a current aircrew member on the Advanced Range Instrumentation Aircraft, I am always looking for anything out there with the history of our airframes. This book is EXCELLENT. The data is accurate and even though you might think you have seen or heard of every variant of the 135 out there, after reading this book you'll soon discover there are a lot more. I highly recommend this book as the benchmark 135 book on the market

The quintessential book on the 135 airframe!
I was a crew member on RC-135s for 7 years and when I saw this book I could not put it down. It gives excellent, well explained descriptions of each variant along with photos making it easy to follow and equally interesting. My compliments to Dr. Hopkins.

The Cats of Seroster
Published in Hardcover by MacMillan Pub Ltd (October, 1995)
Authors: Robert Westall and Sophy Williams
Average review score:

One of the best books ever written !
This is one of my favorite books of all time ! The first time that I read it, I loved it so much that I bought a copy. This is a book I would recommend to Sci-fi fans or cat lovers any day of the week. Some other books of his that I would recommend of his would be BLitzcat, Futuretrack 5 and the Devil on the Road. All of these books are worth reading ! My absolute favorite book though would still ( for three years in a row, and probably for years to come ) be The Cats of Seroster.

My Favorite Book of All Time...
It's interesting to note, other books by Robert Westall are not as great as this one; although Blitzcat is definitely worth reading. This is most definitely the best young-adult reader I've ever come across, but it's not just for kids!! (I'm 20 years old and it's been my favorite for almost 3 years). If you have a special place in your heart for animals and otherwise enjoy fantasy or mideval stories, this one is definitely worth your time! Enjoy!!

Entrancing, even for adults!
I read The Cats of Seroster several months ago, and I still feel the magic. I am NOT a cat lover, but after this book I wanted to go right out to the pound and adopt one! This book is a riveting fantasy with great adventure and dark threads running through that make you think. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it highly.

The Chalk Box Kid
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Clyde Robert Bulla and Thomas B. Allen
Average review score:

A Friendship
I really liked this book because it was about a kid named Gregory who moves to a new town with his mother and father. It is bad enough moving without having any friends, but not making any new ones is pretty bad too. Everyone was given some seeds to plant a garden. But at his new house he doesn't have much of a yard so he can't make a garden. Behind his house is a burned down chalk factory, so he draws a garden. If you want to find out if he makes any friends read this book.

The Chalk Box Kid.
If you want a book where you can slip into the person's shoes, and feel like you know the character, then this is the book for you. Gregory was staying with his Aunt Grace for his birthday, because his mother and father were moving to a new house. They hade to move because got fired and found another job on the other side of town, so they hade to move.
Then when Gregory's mother and father got to Anut Grace's house they hade to get back home. When they got there Gregory asked do I have my own room? He did and he was so happy he said "This is better then a party and cake this is the best Birthday ever!" The next day he started the first day of school, in his new school. That day when he came home from school he was walking around and found a gate to a burnt down building. He cleaned it up a bit and found a box of chalk. That at school Mr. Hiller, a friend of Miss.Perry, came in and taught Gregory and the rest of the kids all about plants. When Gregory when home that night he said to his mother,"We don't have any grass around here". So he started to draw plants in the building. His mother and father did nit want to see. They were too busy.Don,t worry the end gets gets better.
I could not put the book down because the book never ended, and you would most likely would want to stay up and read it.You will like the book but you have to read it to find out!!!

Wonderful book for kids!
This book about Gregory tells how a child learns to express himself and win the admiration of his family, teachers and classmates. We have a copy for each of our second graders and use it as a reader. ....

THE BLACK SAMARITAN, Second Edition
Published in Paperback by Replica Books (01 October, 2000)
Author: Robert Stein
Average review score:

Black Samaritan
Great read! Didn't want to put it down once I started reading.

The Black Samaritan
"This book is one of the finest medical-legal thrillers I have read! The story is taunt, well-paced, as cunningly woven as a spider's web. It got me on page one, like a Robert Ludlum opening, then held my interest throughout. Stein's storytelling forte is passion, emotion, and there is plenty of that here..."

This grabbed my attention!
Although I haven't read a novel for many years, this one was worth the effort. My usual reading material consists of the Wall Street Journal, business articles, the sports page, and last but not least, the Bible. The Black Samaritan kept my interest like no other story and I read it from cover to cover. I finished this very interesting story within one week, which is a personal record for me. Also I read Robert Stein's most recent book, The Vengeance Equation, with the same spell-binding interest. Robert Stein has captured my imagination!
